The student's experience at St. Nicholas School is well rounded. As you may notice when looking at our website, there are a wide variety of activities available.
Sports - Basketball, volleyball, and track are offered to students who enjoy sports.
Performing Arts - A school choir practices weekly and sings at school liturgies. There is a Christmas Concert each December and a Spring Concert each May.
Academic Competitions - There are numerous opportunities for junior high students to compete academically if they desire. Our students have competed successfully in the Newark Archdiocesan Catholic Challenge, the STEM Fair, county spelling bees, and other events when scheduled.
Science - The school holds a STEM Engineering Fair and a STEM Jr. Fair each year. For the past three years, our students have been named either gold, silver, or bronze winners as part of the Jersey Journal's 58th Annual Hudson County STEM Showcase which has been dubbed 'Hudson County's Super Bowl of Science'.
Spiritual Life - The entire school community meets each morning at 7:45 for a 15 minute prayer service. We hear readings from the Gospel and remember those in need during our prayers. Children will experience helping to plan a school Liturgy. This may include reading at different parts of the Mass, or singing with the choir. Each Lenten season, our 8th grade class presents a Living Stations of the Cross for the school, and the wider parish community.
Service Projects - As part of the school mission, students are taught to be mindful of helping others. For this reason, all classes will participate in a service project of their choosing. In the past, the students have coordinated and executed service projects to help the elderly, the needy, victims of cancer and other serious childhood illnesses, impoverished children here in Jersey City, the unborn, the American Heart Association, and numerous others.
Student Organizations - The school sponsors the Monsignor Joseph C. Manz Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. This premier academic organization for students at the early secondary level of education recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in these five areas: Character, Scholarship, Service, Citizenship, and Leadership. Students are nominated for membership in this organization by their teachers. The school also sponsors a Student Council with representatives from Grades 4-8. Both the NJHS and the Student Council members must maintain excellent academic standing in addition to character traits mentioned previously. These students assist in a variety of areas around the school such as working at school functions, acting as 'ambassadors' for Open Houses, and running fundraisers to support causes they choose.
Student Clubs - The school offers a variety of activities for students of all ages. Some of these include: Arts and Crafts, Fine Arts, Technology, STEM Engineering. Chess, Coding, Engineering, Music, Choir, Dance, Ballet, and Taekwondo classes are also offered
Taken altogether, it is easy to see that St. Nicholas School students have a wide variety of activities to help form the complete person. Students are encouraged each day to live the mission of the school - service and leadership - rooted in the Gospel values of faith, hope, and love.
