Welcome to Grade 5 with Mrs.Cynthia Kenny! I have been a Catholic school teacher for 35+ years. My three sons and I are all graduates of St. Nicholas School. In addition to the standard 5th grade topics, I also teach math to our 6th graders.
The math curriculum used by the school is that of the Archdiocese of Newark's Schools Office. In 2014, the Archdiocese completed a curriculum mapping project which carefully evaluated and examined the math curriculum from Kindergarten through high school. This project ensured that students are taught using a smooth and continuously progressing math curriculum that challenges all students. Our math curriculum meets or exceeds the Common Core Curriculum Standards adopted across the United States.
All students participate in one or more service projects each year, serving a diversity of causes:seniors, impoverished children, supporting our missionaries, cancer charities, animal charities, and many others. In March, our class again coordinated a school-wide Math-a-Thon to benefit sick children at St. Jude's Research Hospital. This project brought in $3560 to help provide services for these children. We successfully surpassed our previous goal of $2500!
The 6th graders participated in the Marist Math Olympics. We congratulate Maya Patel, Colin O'Mara, Joshua Buska, William Swiney, and Isabelle Isani for a job well done!
All students are encouraged to continue working online at IXL.com to sharpen Math and Language Arts skills throughout the summer months! Here's the link: https://www.ixl.com/
Students of grades 4-7 are competing in the "Keep Up the Pace" Reading challenge this summer! READ! READ! READ! If you did not receive your package, please call the school office. You are to turn in your work on the first day of school -- September 7th.
Taken altogether the total experience delivers on our school mission: To embrace, nurture, and educate all God's children preparing them for lives of service and leadership rooted in the Gospel values of faith, hope, and love.
